Defiant Stead stands firm in Horspath 2nd's draw

STAND-IN skipper Jamie Stead carried his bat with an unbeaten half-century to earn Horspath 2nd a draw at home to Aston Rowant 2nd in Cherwell League Division 2.

Facing Rowant's 246-8 after the visitors had elected to bat, Horspath were never in the hunt as they lost wickets at regular intervals. But Stead stood firm at the top of the order to finish undefeated on 58 from 133 balls with ten fours. No other batsman made double figures until No 10 Luke Heritage struck an unbeaten 13 as Horspath closed on 127-8, with Dominic Whatman taking 3-12 from as many overs.

Earlier, Rowant opener Tim Morgan made 115 not out from 159 deliveries with 14 fours and a six as Tyrone Eyles, Alfie Turner and Heritage took two wickets apiece.

Horspath 3rd shot out bottom club Abingdon Vale 2nd for just 83 to set up a seven-wicket win in Division 4 at Hales Meadow.

Josh Richardson (3-32) was Horspath's chief destroyer as the wickets were shared around after Abingdon had elected to bat. Skipper Craig Wharton then made 39 with the visitors easing home at 86-3.
