Horspath well represented at the u10s & u11s county awards ceremony

Sat, 03 Oct 2015, 21:04

Horspathboyspresentationdo2015lo.jpg

Horspath featured prominently in the presentation evening for the 2015 season for the county and district cricket sides at u10s & u11s level.
For the 10s county, our very own Josh Richardson won players' player of the year and Charlie Turner won player of the season. A clean sweep for Horspath. George Crawford also received a special mention for a Saxon's winning score of 44 and a dramatic last ball catch to win another match.
For the 11s, Alfie Turner scooped up the players' player award for the second year running. The player of the season went to Zach Lion Cachet of Abingdon Vale, so Horspath had to settle for only 3 of the 4 county awards.

The night served as a good reminder of another great season for the Horspath boys. Well done chaps!

Harrison Ward signs academy deal with Sussex

Thu, 01 Oct 2015, 18:41

From Today's Oxford Mail:

harrisonwardSussex.jpg

HARRISON Ward said he has had his ‘best summer yet’ after signing a two-year deal with Sussex Academy.  The 15-year-old put pen to paper at St Edward’s School, Oxford, where he is a pupil, yesterday afternoon.

It has been a whirlwind few months for the opener, who became the youngest player to score a century for Oxfordshire when he made his Minor Counties debut in July.

He also played his first game in the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League debut for Horspath this season and featured at the ECB Bunbury Festival.

Ward said: “It has been a really exciting and enjoyable summer.

“It has been great fun playing with some great players – it has been my best summer yet.

“I have a lot of hard work in front of me now to get myself through the winter, impress the guys at Sussex and see what next summer brings.”

He continued: “I’ve loved the challenges of starting to play Premier League and Minor Counties cricket, but I also had the privilege of attending the Bunbury Festival.

“I am really excited about the opportunity I now have with Sussex.”

Ward, who was a member of Gloucestershire’s junior academy, said he did receive offers from other counties, but made up his mind after seeing the facilities at Sussex, to whom Oxon are a feeder county.

He added “I went down to Hove to have a look around.

“I was impressed with the facilities and what they had to offer me.”

Keith Greenfield, Sussex Academy director, added: “Harrison has done exceptionally well to earn this place on our Academy.”

Youth Presentation Day

Thu, 24 Sep 2015, 08:39

hccawardwinners lores.jpg

Sunday saw the youth cricket section (players, parents, supporters) come together at the club to reflect on a successful season for our junior teams. The presentations were prefaced, rather fittingly, by one final game of cricket to see off the season. The highlight of the match was probably seeing Karen Timmo and Jenny Mundy umpiring a section of the match and to the bemusement of some of the kids, regularly pointing the trigger finger up in the sky!
The game mixed up teams from the u9s-u13s age groups and it was great to see one last match with the kids all obviously enjoying themselves before the kit gets put away for a while.
Max and the managers then delivered speeches thanking everyone involved in getting cricket matches on and helping the club deliver such a thriving youth section. All the managers emphasized the abundance of team spirit underpinning this success. Individual awards were then presented as follows:

U9s:
Best Batsman: Joe Hickey
Best Bowler: Shreyas Anand

U11s Development:
Best Batsman: Euan Barrett
Best Bowler: Noah Palmer
Manager’s Player: Lukas Yendole

U11s League:
Best Batsman: Luke Heritage
Best Bowler: Alfie Turner
Manager’s Player: Charlie Turner

U13s:
Best Batsman: Matthew Black
Best Bowler: Josh Cummings & Thomas Prestedge
Manager’s Player: Jamie Hicks

U15s:
Best Batsman: Ryan Hicks
Best Bowler: George Horsley

The award winners can be seen pictured with first team skipper, Will Eason.

Feast Day brings curtain down in style

Tue, 15 Sep 2015, 16:44

FEAST Day brought the curtain down on the season at Horspath - and once again it was a unique and wonderful occasion.
The portents were not good with rain forecast.
But, after a delayed start, umpires John Finch and Bob Chamberlain got play under way at 12.20 with the President's XI batting against the backdrop of the big wheel, which loomed over the trees from the village fair.
With old players and guests looking on with drinks in hand, Lee Mason returned to the club to produce a tidy opening spell.
Former Horspath wicket-keeper Andy Wynd (40) and ex-Oxfordshire captain Ian Hawtin (25) shared a first-wicket stand of 66 before both were bowled by Jack Biggs.
Lunch arrived with the score at 103-2.
There followed for many the highlight of the day with the excellent food organised thanks to the efforts of the team led by Val and Cath, while John Thompson was back to his old self marshaling the order of eating.
The usual entertaining speeches came from Max Eason, on behalf of the club, in his own inimitable way, and Clive Ricks, in his own equally inimitable way, for the President's XI, before play resumed.
Ben Thompson, back at his old club, went on to make a classy 86 not out with three effortless sixes and 11 fours, reaching the President's XI's declaration at 224-4 unbeaten thanks to one particularly generous bit of fielding from Dave Ward.
Manoj Parma chipped in with 41, and there was a first Horspath wicket for Chris Jones, who celebrated as if he'd won the league after removing Hassan Mushtaq caught and bowled.
Hassan, by the way, actually did win the Cherwell League with Thame Town!
Robbie Eason led Horspath's run chase with a belligerent 66, which included ten fours and a six.
He put on 72 for the first wicket with Dom O'Connor, but despite breezy knocks from Jones, whose unbeaten 27 featured two sixes and three fours, Biggs (25) and Tom King (20) the victory target proved just beyond Will Eason's side as they closed on 207-7.
Hassan took 3-40 and Graham Charlesworth 2-22, while there was also a wicket for Henry Foster, son of former England and Essex seamer Neil Foster, a Leeds University colleague of Horspath scorer and perennial student Tommy Pritchard, who as usual starred with both pen and pint.
An honourable draw was the outcome, with cricket the real winner.
See you all again in 2016.

Horspath are relegated in heartbreaking fashion

Sun, 06 Sep 2015, 13:06

IT was heartbreak for Horspath as they were relegated by a single point on a dramatic final day in Division 1 of the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League.
Needing seven points to stay up, Horspath were agonizingly only able to pick up six in a five-wicket defeat at home to relegation rivals Tring Park, who leapfrogged above them.
At the same time, Harefield, who like Tring started the day 13 points below Horspath, fought back from 43-4 to win by 101 runs at home to Reading and also jump above Will Eason's side, who plummeted into the bottom two for the first time this season.
Put in to bat on a damp pitch, Horspath suffered an early blow when Robbie Eason was bowled by Duncan Maddinson without scoring.
But then opener Dom O'Connor and Pat Foster shared a stand of 96 for the second wicket, before the former was stumped by Robin Pritchard off Shelvin Gumbs for 31.
That sparked a mini-collapse with four wickets falling for seven runs.
Foster, who hit a fluent 51 off 69 balls with four boundaries and three sixes, was caught at point by Alastair Partner off Rory Criddle without addition to the score.
Shahbaz Ali was bowled by Gumbs, who finished with 2-11 off ten overs, and Adam Mould was caught at mid-off by Andrew Dixon off Simon Stanway to make it 107-5.
Eason and Stephen Green put on 72 for the sixth wicket, before the Horspath skipper was bowled by Michael Payne for 44 off 48 balls, which included four boundaries and three sixes.
Green was run out for 34, but Jamil Faruq smashed 25 off nine deliveries with three sixes in a rousing finale before he was caught at long on by Gumbs off Payne to take Horspath to a respectable 214-8.
Eason then had Dixon caught at mid-on by Lloyd Belcher, before removing Adam Partner courtesy off a smart catch by wicket-keeper Jasper Davies to reduce Tring to 20-2.
But Tom Helm and Payne turned the game in the visitors' favour with a third-wicket stand of 102.
Foster made the breakthrough in his second spell when Faruq dived forward to take a good low catch at mid-off to dismiss Payne for 38.
Foster, who finished with 2-18 from his ten overs, struck again to make it 129-4 with Gumbs holing out to Faruq at long off.
Helm had made 77 off 101 balls with five fours and three sixes when he was trapped lbw by Belcher with the score on 171 to keep Horspath's hopes alive.
But William Jones (43no) and Pritchard, aided by 25 wides, steered Tring home at 217-5 with nine balls to spare.

Horspath's survival hopes suffer a setback

Sun, 30 Aug 2015, 13:32

HORSPATH'S survival hopes in Division 1 of the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League suffered a major setback with a resounding six-wicket defeat at Slough on Saturday.
Will Eason's side now need seven points from their final game at home to relegation rivals Tring Park next Saturday to be sure of staying up.
Horspath are 13 points ahead of both Tring, who kept their hopes of beating the drop alive with an eight-wicket home win over Burnham, and Harefield, who entertain Reading next weekend.
Put in to bat on a damp wicket, Horspath struggled to 134-8 off 50 overs against an accurate Slough attack.
Kit Cutter was first to go, caught at gully by Waqas Hussain off Nabil Shah without scoring.
Robbie Eason then gloved a delivery from Daniyal Akhtar to Shazad Rana to make it 29-2.
Adam Mould fell to the same combination, chasing a wide one.
And it was 68-4 when Jimmy Phillips was caught at cover by Nabil Sher off Slough skipper Bobby Sher for a patient 31.
Will Eason stood firm to make an unbeaten 32, but received precious little support.
Steve Green was stumped off Feroz Baig, Adam Price was given out caught by Akhtar off Sher and Jasper Davies was bowled by the Slough captain - all for singles.
Jamil Faruq was caught in the deep by Shah off Baig, before Tom King put on an unbroken stand of 25 with Eason for the ninth wicket as Sher finished with 3-25 from his ten overs.
Will Eason made an early breakthrough in Slough's reply, trapping Shah lbw.
But then Berkshire opener Hussain took control, dominating a second-wicket stand of 90 with Baig before the latter was caught behind by Davies off King for 19.
Hussain had made a fluent 84 from 82 balls, with 13 fours and a six, when he was caught by Lloyd Belcher off Faruq, with the same pair then combining to remove Gheyas Khan.
But by this stage Slough were as good as home and they duly clinched victory at 135-4 from just 25.2 overs.
It left Horspath with just three points to set up a nail-biting final day of the season next week.

2nds Promoted

Sun, 30 Aug 2015, 09:48

One of the major objectives of this season has been achieved with the promotion of the second team to Division 1 of the Cherwell League for 2016. Despite losing in a high scoring match to Sandford the  failure of both Rowant and Tew to win, coupled with the 10 bonus points earned, guarantees the seconds at the least the runners up spot. With a 15pt advantage, a draw against their nearest challengers Aston Rowant next Saturday should be sufficient to gain them the title.
Congratulations to Krolly, Skelly and Jack who have all captained the side at various times and to all those who have represented the team

Shahbaz's stunning innings sparks Horspath victory

Sun, 23 Aug 2015, 14:10

Shabhaz Ali v Oxford 19 July Ox KO.jpg
Shahbaz Ali 97 not out

SHAHBAZ Ali hit a brilliant unbeaten 97 as Horspath took a massive step towards retaining their Division 1 status in the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League with a crushing 133-run win at home to Reading on Saturday.
Coming to the crease with the hosts in dire straits at 13-3 after being put in to bat, Shahbaz dug in before going on to take the Reading attack apart in explosive fashion.
Joey Todd was first to go, bowled by Ian Slatcher, who then caught Harrison Ward at fine leg off Martin Andersson.
The Reading seamer added to the home side's woes by having Adam Mould caught in the gully by Kashif Nasim.
Jimmy Phillips was snapped up by Sukhmeet Kang at slip off Khalid Malik and Steve Green was bowled by Jack Beaven to make it 51-5.
But Shahbaz then shared a club record stand for the sixth wicket of 105 with skipper Will Eason, who made 51 off 82 balls with six fours and one six before being caught and bowled by off-spinner Nasim.
Shahbaz reached 50 from 100 deliveries, before smashing his next 47 off just 16 balls, with ten fours and five sixes.
Adam Price joined him in the run riot with an unbeaten 34 off 17 balls to take Horspath to an impressive 234-6, with 78 coming off the last six overs.
Shell-shocked Reading's top order were then blown away by Eason.
He sparked an almighty collapse by bowling Curran Gaur with a cracking delivery to make it 8-1, before having Andersson caught at second slip by Price, and then removing run machine Praful Waghela second ball, caught at square leg by Green, for a duck.
With Jamil Faruq trapping Kang lbw three wickets had gone down without a run being scored to leave the visitors in disarray at 27-4.
Eason struck again with an lbw verdict against Firaz Amjad to finish with terrific figures of 4-14 from his ten overs.
Ward's off spin accounted for Sanjit Jaheela, caught behind by Todd, and when Beaven was adjudged lbw to Price's left-arm spin, Reading were 67-7.
Todd's smart stumping did for Slatcher after he had been beaten by Lloyd Belcher's left-arm spin, and Malik, who provided Reading's only resistance with 32, went to a good catch by Mark Skelton at second slip off Faruq.
Skelton then wrapped up the Reading innings for 101, with Eason taking the catch at slip after the ball had been parried by Price.
The resounding victory leaves Horspath 30 points clear of relegation with two games left.

Horspath outclassed by title-chasing High Wycombe

Sun, 16 Aug 2015, 09:33

HORSPATH were outclassed in a thumping 153-run defeat at title-chasing High Wycombe in Division 1 of the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League on Saturday.
The loss leaves Horspath, who conceded a club record 307-7 after putting the hosts in to bat, 18 points above the relegation zone.
High Wycombe had 60 on the board before they lost their first wicket when the introduction of 15-year-old off-spinner Harrison Ward into the attack saw Edmund Casterton caught at short fine leg by Adam Mould.
Sixteen-year-old left-arm spinner Lloyd Belcher, making a welcome comeback to the side after seven weeks out with a broken finger, then removed David Cranfield-Thompson for 44, thanks to Jimmy Phillips's good catch at deep square leg.
Nathan Hawkes (38) joined Paul Sawyer to put on 81 for the third wicket, before he fell to Mould's second catch at short fine leg, with Jamil Faruq this time the beneficiary.
Belcher, who finished with 2-44, removed George Russell with his quicker ball to make it 192-4, but Sawyer and Alan Duncan then put on 71 for the fifth wicket.
Sawyer survived a chance on 99, before being caught by Will Eason at point off Adam Price's spin for a superb 105 off 101 balls with 12 fours and two sixes.
Price (3-64) picked up two more wickets in the last over with Kyle Simmonds stumped by Joey Todd and Duncan falling to a good catch at long off by Ward for 63 off 41 balls with eight fours and two sixes.
Horspath slumped to 12-3 in reply.
Kit Cutter was lbw to Sawyer, Ward mistimed a hook and was caught at square leg by Cameron Parsons off Jonathan Burden, who then had Mould caught behind first ball by Russell.
Phillips was bowled by Adam Dobb to make it 40-4, and Shahbaz Ali was caught behind off Duncan.
Joey Todd, Price and Eason, who top-scored with 35, attempted to salvage some respectability.
But there was no way back and Horspath were 154 all out off 37.5 overs, with Parsons (3-35) the most successful bowler for High Wycombe.

Jock Wood

Wed, 12 Aug 2015, 12:21

JockWood.jpg

Jock joined the Club in 1963 after carving out a reputation for himself as a tearaway fast bowler in the Witney area. During his long association with the Club he was a constant presence whilst he had a long line of new ball partners from Eric Norris through to Steve Shorter, taking in Alan Godfrey, Dennis Messenger and Dave Venn along the way.
Jock was, above all things, a winner. Only finishing as Airey Cup runners - up in his first season, saw him throw his losers medal over the hedge  He never had to do that again as he was an ever present in the side that won the OCA Premier Division 11 times and the Airey Cup on 8 occasions.
He was immensely strong and fit and was blessed with superb action. Even in his later years when he was carrying a chronic groin condition he never gave anything less than 100%, with only a shortened run up being a concession to his injury
He never learnt to do anything with the ball, asked how he had bowled a certain wicket taking ball, he could rarely provide an answer. He was extremely accurate and achieved a lot of bounce, taking as much if not more, satisfaction from hitting a batsman as he did from bowling him.During his frequent visits to the ground in the latter years he was often heard to berate the Horspath bowlers for not being nasty enough.
With a strong arm and a great pair of hands he was an excellent fielder and demanded that the rest of the team were the same. Nobody wanted to be the one to drop a catch off him, as the abuse he usually reserved for opposing batsmen, would just as certainly come your way.
Batting was not his forte, consisting as it did of a lunging forward defence and a slog with very little in between. His batting highlight being scoring 11 off the last over to secure a Village Cup Final victory over Aston Rowant, something he never got tired of reminding everybody
His sporting prowess was not solely confined to cricket, as he was also a fine; 'nobody went passed me twice' centre half for the, at that time, formidable Pressed Steel side. His post retirement years saw him further develop his other main interest, greyhounds - some of which were successful.
His age was one thing that always remained a mystery until last year when his family threw a surprise 80th birthday party for him at the Club. That was the only time he has been seen short of words. Those that knew him will miss him, tales about him, both on and off the pitch, will abound and be embellished, and constantly be retold
Our sympathy at this sad time goes to Andrew, Duncan, Robbie and the grand children

Foster's five-star show sets up Horspath victory

Sun, 09 Aug 2015, 13:52

foster.jpg4113037.jpg
Five Star Foster                 Will Eason celebrates a wicket

PAT Foster shrugged off a troublesome back injury to return figures of 5-18 and set Horspath up for an emphatic eight-wicket home win over arch rivals Oxford in Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 1.
The crushing victory eased Horspath's relegation fears, while at the same time plunged bottom club Oxford a step nearer to the drop, which could be confirmed if they lose at home to Banbury next Saturday.
Horspath's triumph was also a fitting tribute to club legend Jock Wood, whose death was announced shortly before the start, with captain Will Eason saying: "We dedicated the win to him and his family."
Oxford openers Brad Sutherland and Vishane Perera made a solid start after the hosts won the toss and elected to field.
But once Eason made the breakthrough by trapping Sutherland lbw with the score on 32, Oxford's fragile batting line-up was exposed.
And it was the introduction to the attack of Foster, playing his first game for four weeks, that really did the damage.
He had Andrew Clough caught at point by Mark Skelton, before wicket-keeper Jasper Davies snaffled Harvey Eltham down the legside to make it 39-3.
One run later, Foster struck again with Adam Price taking a smart catch at second slip to remove Perera, and when Eason bowled Shamilal Mendis it was 47-5.
Jamil Faruq got in on the act to make it 80-7 by removing Oxford skipper Ian Crosby and Alex Davies with successive deliveries thanks to catches by Skelton and Shahbaz Ali.
To add to Oxford's plight, Mark Beer was then unlucky to be given run out, before Freddie Simon (36) and Alex Morgan salvaged some respectability by putting on 58 for the ninth wicket.
However, Foster returned to trap Simon lbw, before bowling new signing, wicket-keeper Phil Warson, from Bicester & North Oxford, as Oxford were all out for 164.
Horspath lost Harrison Ward early on lbw to Simon, but Jimmy Phillips then joined Robbie Eason to take the score to 78 before he was also lbw, to off-spinner Harvey Eltham.
Eason wasn't to be moved, though, and with Adam Mould hitting a maiden league half-century he steered the hosts to victory.
Eason was unbeaten on 69, clinching victory at 166-2 in style with a straight six to add to his nine fours in a determined 149-ball knock, while Mould's 55 not out came off 92 deliveries with seven fours and two sixes.

u11s ease past Didcot once more

Tue, 04 Aug 2015, 22:33

Monday night witnessed another away victory for Horspath's young colts. Batting first the Path made 118 for 4 with Josh scoring an unbeaten 23; Chris B notching up 20* and Lukas hit 19 not out. In response, the hosts were restricted to 67 all out. Wickets were claimed by Ollies Hudson and Horne, by Joes Gibbs and Hickey and also by Noah, Euan & Antonio. A good fielding effort created 3 notable run outs and excellent catches were held by Joe Hickey and Ollie Horne. Great stuff boys, keep it going!

Price and Eason save Horspath from defeat

Sun, 02 Aug 2015, 12:52

3962380.jpg
Adam Price - 50no and 4-81

ADAM Price and Will Eason shared an unbroken club record seventh-wicket stand of 101 for the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League to save Horspath from defeat on a turning pitch at Burnham at Division 1.
Things looked bleak for Horspath when they came together at 45-6 in reply to Burnham's 228 all out after the hosts had been inserted.
But they combined to frustrate Burnham, with Price making an unbeaten 50 off 104 balls with eight fours, while Eason dug in to finish on 31 not out from 119 deliveries as Horspath secured a battling draw at 146-6 from a massive 65 overs.
Price was completing a fine all-round effort, having earlier taken 4-81 from 28 overs with his mix of seam and spin in Burnham's innings.
He struck an early blow by bowling Fahad Raja through the gate.
Mohammad Fazal was next to go, caught by Will Eason at slip off Mark Skelton to make it 60-2.
Switching to spin, Price had Sajid Ali caught at mid-off by Adam Mould as Burnham reached lunch at 104-3.
After the resumption, Tom King had Omer Siddique (44) caught at slip by Will Eason, before picking up the wicket of the dangerous Aftab Khan, with Steve Green taking a stupendous diving catch at deep square leg.
Shahbaz Ali removed Karan Kumar with Jimmy Phillips taking the catch at extra cover to make it 169-6, before Price had Sulaiman Javed stumped by Jasper Davies and then trapped Adnan Malik lbw.
Azhar Ali was caught by Robbie Eason at mid-off off Will Eason, and when Phillips ran out Harveer Gandam with a throw from the extra cover boundary for 49, Burnham were all out.
Horspath were never in the hunt in reply, with openers Dom O'Connor bowled by Muhammad Haroon and Robbie Eason adjudged lbw to off-spinner Khan, who then bowled Mould and trapped Shahbaz lbw.
When Green was caught behind off left-armer Azhar Ali, Horspath were 38-5 at tea.
Phillips's resistance was ended soon afterwards by Khan for a patient 22, but Price and Eason came to the rescue, batting 31.4 overs to secure the draw as Khan finished with 4-44 off 26 overs.

Oxon record breaker Ward meets predecessor Thompson

Tue, 28 Jul 2015, 12:55

From Today's Oxford Mail:
thommo ward for web.jpg-pwrt3.jpg

Harrison Ward, who has just become the youngest Oxfordshire batsman to score a Unicorns Counties Championship century, met up with Ben Thompson, the player whose 17-year record he beat.

The duo got together on Saturday at Horspath, for whom Ward was playing against Henley – just four days after he made 109 not out against Herefordshire at Brockhampton at the age of 15 years and 269 days.

Thompson, who lives in Nottingham, was returning to the club for whom he was playing when he became Oxon’s youngest century-maker in 1998 with 111, also against Herefordshire at Aston Rowant, aged 17 years and 250 days.

Ward said: “The first person I saw congratulate me was Ben on Twitter. It was nice to meet him after he tweeted me. It is good to keep the record in Horspath.”

Thompson, now 34, added: “I am delighted that record has been broken by someone that plays for Horspath. It is one of the proudest things I have done, scoring a hundred for Oxfordshire.”

Horspath collapse to defeat

HORSPATH suffered a catastrophic collapse to crash to a 72-run defeat at home to leaders Henley in Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 1 on Saturday. Following Friday's deluge it took some sterling work by the ground staff to get the game on, with the start delayed until 1.30pm. Horspath put Henley in to bat after winning the toss with the match reduced to a 49-42 overs split. And that move was quickly rewarded as the visitors were reduced to 9-2, with David Barnes run out by Shahbaz Ali and Matthew Rowe caught by Robbie Eason off his brother, Will, at short mid-wicket.
However, Michael Roberts and Ziafat Ashraf then put on 110 for the third wicket, with the latter surviving three chances before he was caught by Jasper Davies from a Mark Skelton delivery, which popped up, for 47. Skelton struck again one run later when Roberts was caught at point by Shahbaz for 50 from 115 balls, with seven fours, to make it 120-4.
Bjorn Mordt and David Allaway kept Henley ticking along, before falling to successive deliveries from Will Eason, with the score on 160. Stewart Davison safely negotiated the hat-trick ball and, with Matthew Carter, took Henley up to 190-6 declared from 44 overs, Will Eason finishing with 3-35.
Horspath then slumped to 11-2 with Robbie Eason gloving one behind off Tom Nugent, and Harrison Ward, fresh from becoming the youngest Oxfordshire player to score a Unicorns Counties Championship century, unable to repeat those heroics when he was trapped lbw by Tahir Afridi.
However, the in-form Jimmy Phillips (48) and Dom O'Connor (30) raised Horspath's hopes by putting on 78 for the third wicket, before the former was lbw to Carter.
That sparked an almighty collapse with the last eight wickets going down for just 29 runs. Adam Mould was bowled by Afridi, while O'Connor was stumped off Carter and Will Eason was caught behind off the same bowler. Jack Biggs, Davies, Skelton and Shahbaz, who was batting at No 11 after injuring his hand in the field, all went lbw as Afridi (5-49) and Carter (4-24) wreaked havoc to bowl Horspath out for 118.

Harrison takes Thommo's record

Tue, 21 Jul 2015, 12:48

Harrison Ward today became the youngest player to score a century for Oxfordshire as he scored 109* in the second innings of his debut match against Herefordshire at Brockhampton. At the age of 15 he ironically takes the record of another Horspath player, Ben Thompson, who at the age of 17 was the previous youngest player to score an Oxfordshire century, also against Herefordshire, a record that had stood for 17 years
Many congratulations to him, lets hope we get a repeat on Saturday

Jimmy Phillips's unbeaten century fails to save Horspath from defeat

Sun, 19 Jul 2015, 13:17

Jimmy_Phillips_v01.jpg
Jimmy Phillips 106 not out

JIMMY Phillips's unbeaten century couldn't save Horspath from a four-wicket defeat at Harefield in Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 1 on Saturday.
The left-hander's superb 106 not out beat his own club record score for the league of 104 not out against Thame Town in 2011. His runs, which came off 179 balls and included 13 fours and a six over mid wicket, took Horspath to 243-9 after they had been put in to bat. Phillips put on 107 for the second wicket with Robbie Eason after Harrison Ward had been caught at extra cover by Scott Friend off Doug King for ten.
Eason's patient innings came to an end when he was bowled by off-spinner Daniel Ogden for 37 to make it 133-2
Horspath then suffered a middle order collapse with debutant Dom O'Connor, Adam Mould, skipper Will Eason and Jack Biggs falling cheaply to leave the visitors on 169-6.
But Phillips found a willing ally in Adam Price, who hammered 43 off 36 balls with six fours and two sixes, including one massive hit over deep square leg.The pair had put on 65 for the seventh wicket when Price was caught by Friend off Ogden, who went on to dismiss Jamil Faruq and Jasper Davies to finish with 5-61.

However, Horspath's total on a good pitch with a fast outfield wasn't to prove enough.

Harefield made a good start in reply, and had put on 51 for the first wicket when Jalpesh Vijay was unfortunate to be adjudged lbw to Price, who had switched from bowling seam to spin. Friend took the score to 95 with skipper Simon Macey, before he was caught at mid-on by Biggs off Price, who caught and bowled George Shiel in the last over before tea to make it 107-3. But Macey and Robert Tidey then shared a match-winning stand of 125 for the fourth wicket.
Price reverted to seam to induce an edge from Macey, with Davies pulling off a brilliant diving catch to dismiss the Harefield skipper for an excellent 95 off 142 balls with six fours and a six. However, by then the hosts were closing in on victory. Faruq bowled Tidey for 67 from 93 deliveries with six fours and a six, and Price completed his third five-wicket haul of the season by shattering Lee Tyrrell's stumps, but Harefield got over the line at 245-6 with seven balls to spare.
Bowling unchanged, Price finished with figures of 5-119 from his marathon 27.5-over spell.

Harrison Ward's outstanding form this season playing in the Premier League and for his school, in addition to sundry representative sides has led to his call up for the full county side.

Banbury survive Horspath scare to stay in touch with leaders

Mon, 13 Jul 2015, 14:14

From Today's Oxford Mail:

for 26 in the first over after lunch. Picture: Steve Wheeler

BANBURY were given a second scare this season by Horspath before emerging 78-run winners in a low-scoring Division 1 clash at the Recreation Ground. In a match which in many ways mirrored the game between the two sides on the opening day of the season, Banbury collapsed to 166 all out after being put in to bat. But Horspath then caved in to 88 all out as third-placed Banbury closed the gap on leaders Henley to 14 points.

With overhead conditions favouring swing bowling, Horspath skipper Will Eason, fresh from making his Oxfordshire debut, produced a superb display of 5-18 in his first spell of 14 overs to help reduce Banbury to 81-6.

But then just as they had done back in early May, Ashley Blanchard and teenager Will Briggs stopped the rot with a match-winning partnership of 79 for the seventh wicket. Blanchard made 57 off 73 balls, with seven fours and a six, before he was trapped lbw by Adam Krol. Briggs’s resistance was ended by Pat Foster, who mopped up the tail to finish with 4-52. Eason’s final figures were 5-40.

Horspath made a solid start in reply, but after openers Robbie Eason and Harrison Ward fell with the score on 33, Banbury got well on top. The last six wickets fell for just 11 runs, with the pace of Karl Penhale (3-23) and off-spinner Richard West (3-10) doing the damage.

We won the league, we won the league, we won the league, we won the league..

Sun, 12 Jul 2015, 23:07

Horspath u11s emerged as county champions today after winning finals day at Charlbury cc. In an absolutely cracking team performance, the boys won the semi final against Cumnor by 9 wickets before hammering the hotly tipped favourites, Aston Rowant in the final.
The first game saw Cumnor bat first and race off to a great start before the Horspath bowlers got on top and limited Cumnor to 95 for 7 from their 20 overs. Alfie and Luke took two wickets apiece with Chris Batten claiming 3-7 from 3 overs. Horspath then chased the target down within 15 overs. Hylton opened and added a solid 22 not out. Alfie added a similarly solid 26 not out and Luke smashed a quickfire unbeaten 26 from 11 balls. Cumnor were despatched and next up were the holders, Aston Rowant.
Horspath batted first in the final and despite the loss of an early wicket were soon cracking on at 7 an over. Alfie finished unbeaten on 25, Luke hit a smart 23 and Charlie got to retire and come back in again as he made a good 29 not out. 134 was posted and included some quickfire runs from Chris, Owen and Olly. A good total got Aston thinking and soon the Rowant boys were sweating. Charlie then blew the Rowant top order away with a great spell and claimed 5-15 from his 4. Alfie, Lukas and Olly all chipped in with wickets but it was the whole team with dynamism and energy in the field that did for Rowant. The Aston boys were blown away and finished on 28 all out. Horspath had won the final by 106 runs and claimed the trophy to deserved plaudits all round. Come on!

Horspath then really got going with the ball as Minster could only score 29 before being bowled out in 15 overs. Adam Price is just right in Horspath victory

Mon, 06 Jul 2015, 07:57

From Today's Oxford Mail:
3962380.jpg
Adam Price 5-36

Adam Price picked up a five wicket haul after Robbie Eason carried his bat for an unbeaten 81 as Horspath posted a crushing 140-run victory at Tring Park in Division 1. Price returned figures of 5-36 with his engaging mix of left arm seam and spin to help send Tring crashing to 67 all out following Eason’s sterling effort, which had led Horspath to 207-8.

With overnight rain having left one-third of the pitch saturated, it looked like it could be a crucial toss to win and Tring skipper Duncan Maddinson had little hesitation in inserting the visitors.

After a slow start, Horspath steadily upped the tempo, with Eason and Jimmy Phillips putting on 95 for the second wicket. Phillips had made 64 off 88 balls with ten fours when he fell to a brilliant one-handed catch at extra cover by Michael Payne off Shelvin Gumbs’ off-spin.

Adam Mould’s cameo maintained the momentum, before he was the first of four wickets to fall for eight runs as Horspath slipped to 151-6. But Eason remained rock solid to take Horspath to a respectable total, with five fours and a six in his 186 balls innings. Gumbs finished with 5-60 for Tring.

The merit of Eason’s marathon knock quickly became apparent as Price trapped Robin Pritchard lbw with the first ball of Tring’s innings, and then Will Eason dismissed Maddinson in the same fashion to make it 3-2.

Eason struck again to bowl opener Adam Partner, before Price switched ends and turned to spin, taking 4-7 in his second spell. Fellow spinner Adam Krol picked up 3-14 as Tring lost their last seven wickets for 15 runs to capitulate inside 23 overs, with only Gumbs (37) showing any resistance.

The emphatic win takes Horspath up to fifth place – their highest this season.

Kidlington fell short by almost a hundred by scoring 100 for 12. Debutants Sam Tuck and Jamie Farrell claimed a wicket each (1-9 & 1-10 respectively). The boys fielding was particularly impressive with 5 run outs and great catches from Joe Hickey and Euan.

Horspath hold on for a draw to extend unbeaten run

Mon, 29 Jun 2015, 12:18

From today's Oxford Mail:
3942453.jpg
Will Eason took 3 cheap wickets

Horspath's last pair survived the last six overs to secure a draw at home to Slough – and extend their unbeaten run in Division 1 to five matches. After a well-contested game, the hosts finished on 158-9 in pursuit of their target of 184.

Horspath decided to field first, and had their opponents struggling at 94-6 at lunch. When left-arm spinner Lloyd Belcher, who produced a long and controlled spell, took a wicket with the first ball after the interval, Horspath were well on top.

However Slough skipper Bobby Sher and Shazad Rana helped Slough reach 183 all out in the 62nd over. Home skipper Will Eason returned 3-24 off 11.4 overs, while left-arm seamer Tom King, who dismissed the dangerous Waqas Hussain, took 2-19.

The Horspath innings followed a very similar pattern to Slough, as a couple of run outs left them struggling at 95-7.

While Adam Price and Andrew Roberts were adding 48 for the eighth wicket, they had visions of victory.

But in the end, Price, with an unbeaten 41, and last-man Belcher were left to fend off defeat against a surprisingly defensive Slough, who kept their fielders posted around the boundary until the last over.

Praful Waghela stars but Horspath survive

Mon, 22 Jun 2015, 09:15

From Today's Oxford Mail:
3924077.jpg
Adam Price 5-89

Horspath were thankful for rain as they drew their Division 1 clash at Reading after the hosts’ Praful Waghela had made an imperious unbeaten 153. The visitors were in dire straits at 91-7 with 24.4 overs remaining in reply to Reading’s 271-7 from 60 overs when a deluge washed out the game.

Horspath had put the hosts in to bat in overcast conditions after winning the toss. Adam Price picked up the first three wickets following a rain break, including Curran Gaur, to make it 51-3. But Waghela, dropping down to No 4 from his usual opening slot, then took centre stage. He was especially strong square of the wicket on both sides as he hit 18 fours.

It was the second time a batsman had hit 150 off Horspath’s attack this season, following Henley’s Michael Roberts.

Left-arm spinner Lloyd Belcher had Amardeep Dosanjh caught behind off his first ball, but was unable to add to his tally. Price, meanwhile, switched from seam to off spin for his second spell, claiming the wickets of Sukhmeet Kang and Khalid Malik to finish with 5-89 off 22 overs.

With opener Robbie Eason falling to a brilliant one-handed diving catch by Malik at mid-on off Ian Slatcher, Horspath’s reply never got going. A regular stream of wickets followed with leg-spinner David Hartley taking 4-51, while Malik tied up the other end with 2-10 off 8.2 overs before the rain arrived.

u11s edge past Sutton Courtenay

Tue, 16 Jun 2015, 09:21

The u11s league side made it 5 wins from 5 last night in an unusual game played at Steventon. A combination of an artificial track, an undulating outfield and changes to the batting order meant that Horspath were not at their most fluent. Nevertheless, a win is a win and the boys emerged as victors by 13 runs. Horspath batted first to score 113 for 8. George notched up 15 at no 5, Alfie 20 at 6 and Charlie hit a rapid fire 22 (from 8 balls) when he came in at #8.
Sutton were restricted to 100 for 9 in response. Horspath utilised all 10 bowlers (2 overs each). Hylton and Josh both claimed two wickets: the former at the cost of 12 runs and the latter for 10.

Controversy as Horspath pip rivals Oxford in a real thriller

Mon, 08 Jun 2015, 13:45

From Today's Oxford Mail:
CONTROVERSY raged as Horspath beat arch rivals Oxford by one wicket in a thrilling Division 1 basement battle at Roman Way.
3887332.jpg

Chasing Oxford’s 198-8 after the hosts had elected to bat, Horspath arrived at the last over needing 11 to win with two wickets left. But the umpires ruled that Oxford had failed to bowl their 50 overs in the allotted time of three hours and 20 minutes, which triggered six penalty runs to come into effect at the end of the innings.

From the first ball, Horspath skipper Will Eason was caught at mid-wicket by Ryan Carters off Freddie Simon. Last man Lloyd Belcher then guided a single to third man, before Pat Foster hit a four through square leg, leaving Horspath thinking – with the penalty runs – they had won.

However, the match then descended into farce, with the umpires ruling that the final three balls had to be bowled, which Foster negotiated successfully.

For Horspath it was the sweetest of successes coming in the first top-flight meeting between the two clubs since their demerger 11 years ago.

But for bottom club Oxford it was their fifth straight defeat.

The hosts had been buoyed going into the match by the signing of New South Wales opening batsman Carters, and he made a solid 38 on his debut. Stewart Laudat then stroked 60 from 78 deliveries, including seven fours, and Sean Thornton, batting with a runner for part of his innings, hit 52 off 80 balls, also with seven boundaries.

Left-arm spinner Lloyd Belcher, with 2-26, was the pick of the Horspath attack, while Shahbaz Ali picked up three wickets in four balls at the death.

Robbie Eason made a gritty 43 at the top of the order for Horspath, and there was a fluent 35 from Adam Mould. Spinners Shami Mendis and Harvey Eltham pegged the visitors back, before the match came to its dramatic and bizarre conclusion.

Ward and Shahbaz Ali star as Horspath break their duck

Mon, 01 Jun 2015, 07:37

From today's Oxford Mail:
2064458.jpg
The Master Finisher - Shahbaz

Teenage opener Harrison Ward and experienced all-rounder Shahbaz Ali hit half-centuries as Horspath recorded their first win in Division 1 with a six-wicket victory at home to Burnham.

Chasing 212 after putting Burnham in to bat, Horspath suffered a blow when Adam Price was out for nought.

But Ward and Jimmy Phillips put on 98 for the second wicket, before the latter was stumped off left-arm spinner Azhar Ali to make it 106-2.

Ward, showing excellent technique and application for a 15-year-old, reached his first league half-century.

His patient 101-ball knock, which included six fours, came to an end when he holed out at long on off Ali for 52, a ball after being dropped.

He was replaced by the master finisher Shahbaz, who made an unbeaten 50 off 51 balls, with six fours and a six.

The left-hander found willing allies in Steve Green and Adam Mould, who scored an unbeaten 25, to steer Horspath home with 2.1 overs to spare.

Earlier, Burnham had slumped to 2-2, with Price bowling Sajid Ali and then providing debutant wicket-keeper Andy Roberts with a first victim when Aftab Khan nicked behind, both for ducks.

They were still in trouble at 50-5 after Price (3-30) claimed the wicket of Faisal Miraj and Will Eason dismissed Harveer Gandam and Fahad Raja.

However, Raja Rehman hit 64 off 57 balls with six sixes Horspath then had Burnham 155-9, but Azhar Ali (31) and Muddassar Nawaz (28no) put on 57 for the last wicket, Shahbaz finishing with 3-43.

Horspath blown away by record-breaker Roberts

Mon, 25 May 2015, 07:25

From Today’s Oxford Mail:
3067537.jpg
Harrison Ward Batted Well
on League Debut for Horspath

Horspath were blown away by Henley opener Michael Roberts, who hit a league club record 155 to set the reigning champions on the way to a resounding 143-run victory in Division 1 at the Brakspear Ground.

Roberts flayed the Horspath attack to all parts to take his side to a massive 296-7 off their 50 overs after they had been put into bat. His superb innings eclipsed the unbeaten 152 made by Carl Crowe for Henley against Potters Bar five years ago. And it was also a record score conceded by Horspath, exceeding the 293-4 Gerrards Cross rattled up in 2011.

Roberts’s runs came off 137 balls and included 16 fours and six sixes. He cut loose in the second half of the innings after Henley has been held to 83-0 off 25 overs with Horspath skipper Will Eason conceding just 14 runs from his ten overs.

However, Roberts and Matthew Rowe (44) then took the game away from them in a 122-run second-wicket stand. The Berkshire opener was eventually stumped off medium pacer Adam Mould, who picked up 5-59 from his first bowl in the league.

Horspath were never in the hunt, but there was an impressive debut by 15-year-old opener Harrison Ward, who made 47.

Showing maturity beyond his years, the left-hander survived a sharp early chance to hit five fours in his 75-ball stay before being eighth out, lbw to Euan Brock. Indeed, the Berkshire left-arm spinner took the last five wickets as Horspath tumbled to 153, finishing with 5-33.

Horspath Waste Victory Chance

Mon, 18 May 2015, 13:11

From Today's Oxford Mail:
harefield2015.jpg

Horspath were left to rue a missed opportunity as they slipped to a 16-run defeat at home to Harefield in Division 1. Having dismissed the Middlesex club for 191 after they had elected to bat first, Horspath were well placed to claim victory at 104-3 from 24 overs. But a series of poor shots saw them to slump to a disappointing 175 all out, despite being handed a massive 54 extras.

Harefield had made a bright start after taking first use of a decent-paced pitch, with last week’s century-maker Jalpesh Vijay and captain Simon Macey putting on 56 for the first wicket. Horspath skipper Will Eason made the breakthrough with Vijay caught at cover by Adam Price for 27, before then having Scott Friend caught behind by debutant Jasper Davies.

Eason (3-30) struck again by accepting a caught and bowled chance from Macey (38) to make it 85-3. Pat Foster then removed Burham Mirza and Daniel Ogden with successive balls as Harefield tumbled to 111-5. Price got in on the act with the wickets of Dhavalkumar Norotam and Robert Tidey, who top-scored with 49 off 60 balls, before Jamil Faruq and Lloyd Belcher mopped up the tail.

Robbie Eason was unlucky to be bowled early on by Doug King in Horspath’s reply. But with Harefield’s wayward attack contributing 35 wides, the hosts had reached 71 when Jimmy Phillips was next out, lbw to Daniel Evans.

Opener Kit Cutter drove Evans (4-45) straight into Mirza’s hands at mid-on for 27, Adam Mould was caught behind by Jamie Knife off the same bowler, and a run later Shahbaz Ali was caught at cover to make it 104-5. Davies fell to a smart one-handed catch by Knife, Price was trapped lbw by King and with wickets continuing to tumble Will Eason was left unbeaten on 22 with seven overs left.

u11s off to a flyer

Thu, 07 May 2015, 22:10

The u11s began their season in fine style, beating Warborough & Shillingford by 7 wickets with 15.4 of their 20 overs to spare. W&S batted first and were skittled out for 15. Josh, Alfie and Hylton all took two wickets each with the former two both on a hat-trick at one stage. Horspath utilised 7 different bowlers for the 7 overs of the W&S innings and were always in control. The runs were knocked off by the middle of the 5th over even if we did concede 3 wickets on a sticky green track.

Jack stars as Horspath beat Oxford

Tue, 05 May 2015, 13:24

An inspired spell of seam bowling by Jack Biggs was instrumental in securing Horspath an eight wicket victory over their neighbours in the National T20 yesterday. At 90-5 at the end of the 15 over Oxford looked in position to post a competitive total largely due to a fluent 32 from the evergreen Stuart Laudat. However in 2.2 overs Jack swept through the lower order taking 4 - 7 as the last five wickets fell for 5 runs. All the Horspath bowlers bowled tidily with Shahbaz completing his 4 over spell for only 18, and Lloyd back to his best taking 2 for 18, being worthy of special mention.
An opening stand of 27 between Jimmy and Pat got Horspath off to a good start before they both fell at that score. That allowed Shahbaz and Mouldy to take centre stage  and they batted with with increasing aggression to take Horspath home to an eight wicket victory with 6 overs to spare. Adam finishing on 34* and Shab on 31*
Horspath travel a bit further in the next round to take on Gerrards Cross on Monday 25/5

Thanks to all

Fri, 03 Apr 2015, 18:57

Many thanks to the impressive number of members who turned out in some pretty foul weather this morning to get the grounds ready for the official start to the season next week. It was particularly pleasing to see some of the youth players bringing along their parents to help. The weather did prevent the painting of the sightscreens and boundary boards so we could do with a few to turn up on Monday morning, when it is supposed to be dry, to complete the job. We are aiming for a 9.30 start - absolutely no skill required.

Notification of Cancellations due to bad weather

Mon, 30 Mar 2015, 13:13

The mechanism for notifying players when matches or training sessions are cancelled in 2015 will be as follows:

If matches or training sessions are cancelled due to bad weather, we will send out an email message to players.  We will also post details on the website ( www.horspathcricket.com) and the Club’s Twitter account (@horspathcricket).

Please note we will NOT be sending out TEXT messages to notify cancellations. The free text messaging service that we have used in previous seasons is no longer available and the cost of broadcasting text messages to all players is prohibitive.

So, if games or training are in doubt due to bad weather, it will be the responsibility of players to check:
1) their email;
2) the Club’s website ( www.horspathcricket.com); or
3) the Club’s twitter account (@horspathcricket).

If matches are cancelled for other, unexpected, reasons (eg opposition unable to raise a side) we will make every effort to contact the players involved in the match, including sending text messages, if necessary.

Players should make sure their contact details are fully up to date by logging into the website and checking their profile.

Dom stars in Tasmania

Sun, 29 Mar 2015, 10:12

Dom O'Connor, who has spent the close season in Tasmania, is currently playing for the University of Tasmania in the Premier League Grade 1 Final against Kingborough.  After scoring 50 in the semi final, Dom opened the batting and was run out for 11 in the first innings and had the experience of facing opening bowler Jackson Bird who has played for Australia.  Dom's opening partner was Ollie Robinson, who had a season with Horspath a few years back; he unfortunately got a first baller.

The University of Tasmania has welcomed Ben Thompson, Ned Murray and, of course Dom's brother, Matt in previous seasons.

Ominously for Horspath the top scorer in the University's innings was Tim Paine with 115. Tim has represented Australia on a number of occasions and is signed up to play for Banbury throughout the 2015 season, who happen to be Horspath's opponents in the first league game.

Horspath strengthen their side as the two Adams join

Thu, 26 Feb 2015, 21:10

Horspath took their first steps towards strengthening their side for the challenge of competing in the Home Counties Premier League Division 1, by welcoming Adam Price and Adam Mould to the Club.
Adam Price, a high quality all rounder, whilst now being domiciled in Headington, will fill the role as Horspath's category 3 [overseas player] for the 2015 season. Most of his cricket has been played for Hamilton Wickham in the Newcastle District [ NSW] League where he has a great record. His left arm seam bowling will add variety to Horspath's attack. He is also a hard hitting middle order batsmen where he will position himself among the other Horspath bowlers who think they can bat.
Adam Mould origins are from much closer to home. He has played most of his cricket for Bledlow Village,  with an interlude playing for Dinton in the HCPL. He has represented Bucks at all age groups, and captained both Bledlow and the Cherwell League Rep. side. Horspath have witnessed at first hand how devastating he can be with the bat, and look forward to him replicating that form for Horspath
A very warm welcome to both players.

Foster shines in Horspath’s cup final romp

Tue, 16 Sep 2014, 15:41

From Today's Oxford Mail:
TollettFINAL.jpg

HORSPATH capped a triumphant season by storming to an eight-wicket win over Shipton-under-Wychwood in the Bernard Tollett Oxfordshire Cup final at Witney Mills.

Skipper Will Eason’s side, who had already gained promotion to Home Counties Premier League Division 1, steamrollered Shipton in double quick time. Needing 112 runs for victory, Horspath reached their target in the 15th over thanks to some spectacular hitting from Pat Foster.

The all-rounder hammered an unbeaten 62 off just 28 balls with three sixes and eight fours, finishing the game with a maximum. He dominated a third wicket stand of 77 with opener Robbie Eason, who finished unbeaten on 30.

Earlier, young opener Jeremy Kirby had held Shipton together with a stylish 49. Their hopes of a challenging total were ended when Shahbaz Ali raced through the lower order, taking 4-18 off three overs. Shipton were all out in the 18th over for 111.

George Seacole claimed two cheap Horspath scalps but then Foster took charge to see them home.

Horspath’s title dreams are shattered by super Shipton

Mon, 08 Sep 2014, 10:09

From today’s Oxford Mail:

Horspath’s Shahbaz Ali square cuts this delivery for four as Shipton-under-Wychwood wicket-keeper Andy Hemming jumps off the ground

Horspath's hopes of becoming Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 2 champions were shattered by a 35-run defeat in a topsy-turvy encounter at Shipton-under-Wychwood. The leaders’ loss opened the door for Reading, who took the title with a nail-biting two-wicket home win over Cove.

Having secured promotion last week, Horspath looked like they were on the way to adding the championship after putting Shipton in to bat and reducing them to 6-3. Pat Foster removed brothers Joe and Ross Barrett before Will Eason bowled Craig Wood.

Jamil Faruq then had Andy Hemming caught by Foster at second slip. But Simon Hole, who survived a confident lbw appeal from Shahbaz Ali on ten, stood firm. However, with Anupam Sanklecha, Jason Hunt and Shaun Cross falling at the other end, Shipton were still struggling at 118-7.

But then Hole was joined by George Seacole, who made 40 off 39 balls with four boundaries and a six to take the score to 183-8. Hole was finally dismissed for 83 off 132 balls, with five fours and two sixes as Shipton finished on 209-9. Foster took 4-45, while Eason picked up 3-16 from his ten impressive overs.

Horspath rallied from having Kit Cutter bowled by Sanklecha to reach 106-1 in the 32nd over. But then Robbie Eason was caught by Seacole off Jason Hunt for 51 off 101 balls, with five fours and a six, and Jimmy Phillips was run out in suicidal fashion for 38.

Wickets fell at regular intervals after that with Sanklecha (4-22) returning to polish off the tail as Horspath slumped to 174 all out.

Horspath heros clinch promotion to top flight

Mon, 01 Sep 2014, 08:42

From today's Oxford Mail:
2014_1stXX_Winners.jpg
Horspath celebrate promotion after the win over Amersham

Horspath will play in club cricket’s top flight for the first time after securing promotion from Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League Division 2 in a nerve-jangling 19-run win over Amersham at the Recreation Ground.

It completes a remarkable rise for the village club, who were only reformed in 2004 following their ill-fated merger with Oxford. Placed in Division 5 of the Cherwell League ten years ago, they can now look forward to playing the likes of Henley, Banbury and, of course, Oxford, next season.

But before then the leaders will bid to cap a stellar season by capturing the title at Shipton-under-Wychwood next Saturday, holding a four-point lead over Reading. Skipper Will Eason said: “It has been an amazing achievement for the club from where we were dumped ten years ago. "We would really like to finish it off by winning it.”

Horspath went into Saturday’s game, knowing five points would be enough to secure promotion, and they picked up four of those by posting 224-4 after being put in to bat in overcast conditions. Robbie Eason and Kit Cutter put on 84 for the first wicket, before the former was caught at long off by Edward Bowcock off left-arm spinner Stephano Joubert for 48.

Jimmy Phillips and Cutter took the score to 142, before the opener was bowled for 42 by Lines, who then caught Shahbaz Ali at deep square leg off Joubert. Mark Skelton made 32 off 27 balls before he was run out, and Phillips was undefeated on 59 off 69 balls at the close, with his innings including four cracking boundaries.

When Pat Foster (3-19) trapped the dangerous Bruce Friedrichs lbw in the fifth over of Amersham’s reply, Horspath had secured the fifth point they needed for promotion.

Christopher Cann kept Amersham’s hopes alive with a fluent 69 off 84 balls, with ten fours and one six, before he was given out caught behind by Andy Wynd off Ali following discussion between the umpires, making it 117-4. With catches being dropped, Amersham inched closer to their target as Hugh Jackson threatened to spoil the promotion party by smashing an unbeaten 34 off 25 balls.

But victory was secured as he ran out of partners, and the celebrations went on long into the night. Now for the title . . .
