Season Ends In Defeats

The season came to an end with the Club suffering defeats in the two traditional end of season Festival matches. On Sunday the Shepherd's X1 secured a narrow 10 run victory with the Pickford and Wood families being prominent for the opposition. Andy Wood top scored with 81 whilst his son Jack enjoying himself with 23* and 3- 53. Henry matched his father Richard with two wickets as Horspath fell 10 runs short of the Shepherd total of 230-6 in their 35 overs despite Steve Green's outstanding 115.Mention must be made of umpire Dennis Whittaker's 5 dismissals in the Horspath innings
The finale of the season came with an bravado performance from Jack Brooks in the President's match. He may only bat number 10 for Northants [ a different County next year though] but he would certainly bat much higher in Club cricket. The Horspath attack was put to the sword as he raced to 109 with 4 sixes and 15 fours. He was kept company by Meggers [ 48] who in doing so became the first opening batsman to make it through to lunch undefeated. Ricksy's declaration on 240 for 4 was more generous than usual.
Despite losing Tim Hutchison early a partnership of 112 between Robbie and Shahbaz put the Club in a good position prior to the last 20 overs. However Shahbaz was run out for 49 [ Brooks again]. With the game evenly poised the introduction of Jack to the attack quickly tilted it in favour of the President's X1. The turning point came when he yorked Robbie for 81 and the tail did not seem to fancy it much. There was time for Lloyd Belcher to showcase his talent with 3 wickets as the Horspath innings folded 35 runs short on 205
